OVERVIEW
In this project, I was presented with the story of Ondřej, a young man facing an unusual Christmas challenge: he's tasked by his mother-in-law with killing the family carp for the holiday dinner. What starts as a nervous attempt to fit in takes a surreal turn, as the seemingly ordinary fish in the bathtub turns out to have its own agenda — and a deep connection to the family's strained dynamics. The goal was to bring this quirky, emotionally layered narrative to life in a way that balances dark humor with unexpected heart.
Challenges & Approach
Spoilers ahead -- The biggest challenge was bringing the talking carp to life in a way that felt both original and fitting for the film’s surreal tone. Rather than relying on traditional techniques, I took a more experimental route and used concatenative synthesis — a rarely used method that allowed me to construct the carp’s voice from fragments of other sounds. It was a bold choice, but one that ultimately shaped one of the film’s most memorable elements.
The result
I think the sound work on Kapr really came together — it’s probably the first project where the final result sounds exactly like I imagined. Every natural sound blends seamlessly with the stylized parts. If I could change anything, I’d go for a 5.1 mix instead of stereo.
